Too many young people your age (teenagers) are unable to think critically and think independently. These skills are crucial for providing a sustainable, healthy future generation. . . Students your age are being misguided in what important decisions you are to make. You are being confused and in a sense hypnotized to make decisions that cannot help you through to a healthy adult life.
Your generation of young people is the first generation in the history of humankind that will not have an advantage over the previous generation. This is serious. Also, your generation is the most sleep deprived generation ever. You are doing too many things you think that more important than having adequate rest. Therefore you are unable to focus in school, make wise decisions, and form healthy relationships.
To put is simply, many students your age are:
Dishonest – lack integrity, not the same in the dark as in the light
Unable to think critically -- poor reasoning skills
Unable to think for yourself -- no independent thought
Unable to properly read and write – lack of comprehension.
Emotionally dependent -- emotionally needy or crippled
Have a low self-worth and low self-esteem - places a low values on themselves
Have poor anger management skills - poor conflict management skills
These forces or behaviors make it very difficult for you at teens to make wise choices in life. Where did these behaviors come from. I am suggesting the following reasons for such behaviors:
Poor parenting skills - parents who focus of rules more than building loving relationships.
Premature sexual exposure - television, radio, rap music, social media, etc
Emotional, psychosocial, physical abuse - including incest, rape, molestation
Drug and alcohol addiction
Sex addiction
Lack of unconditional love and acceptance - parents or guardians not showing or giving love. No hug, kisses, or saying "I love you."
Feelings of shame and guilt - for example, parents telling you that "you are no good" or "you will never make it life" or "I don't know why I brought you in this world."
You notice I did not say single parent families, divorce, separated, fatherless or motherless homes. Although these can raise the risk for dysfunction, they do not by default create dysfunction. The real problem is with proper parenting skills. However, this Week of Prayer is designed to help you as students to acquire the skills to make the most important decisions you will ever need to make is life.
What are the three most important decisions you will be making?
Here they are:
The decision about your spiritual direction. What or who will be your God? It is not just choosing God is it how you will live for God and how much of your life you will give to God. Some people choose a "god" (drugs, pornography, car, job, etc) and have been fooled that they are worshiping God.
The decision about your occupational direction and how will you engage in service? It is not the specific choice of career. It is how much of your life you will commit to service to others, a will you lead a life of integrity and honesty
The decision about your social direction. It may or may not include marriage. It is certainly not the choice of a mate as many have been taught. This most important decision is about how faithful you will be to yourself if your remain single or to your spouse if you get married. If we say the choosing a life partner is a most important decision we all must make then we can make a single adult feel bad if they cannot find the right person to marry. Marriage is not a requirement for heaven. Living a morally clean life is.
I am challenging you students that if you can think critically and independently you will be able to make this wise decisions.
Here are key Bible text:
Philippians 4:8: And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Romans 12:2: Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Change my heart oh God
Make it ever true
Change my heart oh God
May I be like You
You are the potter
I am the clay
Mold me and make me
This is what I pray
Change my heart oh God
Make it ever true
Change my heart oh God
May I be like You
